It isn't what he's saying at all. It's true, for better or worse Bruce often acts as a compass for others, not to show them the right way to go, because that kind of navigation is one he still struggles with. But as a kind of boundary- a way to narrow the field. He is not an emotional touchstone or even very good at moral support. He isn't trying to comfort Quentin here. He thinks that perhaps he'd been the one looking for comfort. Trying to find a meaning underneath it all.
