It's habit, keeping their light shuttered up so it doesn't give their presence away, and also because yeah, they're well aware of that crack and some of the questions people might have about it. Sometimes they show it to people on purpose, but usually that's for a reason. And it's not like they need it, with the aurora shedding plenty of light.
