[ Eliot's had a run-in with the opals already, so he knows what it is when Quentin holds it out. And he has a feeling that if Quentin is bringing it to him, it's about him, which makes Eliot feel a prick of discomfort. He's not exactly the sort of person that puts his thoughts or feelings on display.

He reaches for it as he watches Quentin, and stops before touching it. He could use his tie to grab it. He doesn't know if he actually wants to see what it is.

Eliot just decides to grab it.

[ In the grand scheme of things, it's not damaging. It's not some horrible part of Eliot's past, or some deep emotional thing he wants to avoid. But it's a memory that's adjacent to something he holds close, which is that first time meeting Quentin. ]
