EVENT LOG: THE NIGHT WE MET

EVENT LOG:
THE NIGHT WE MET

characters: everyone.
location: the path from downtown beacon to the harbor; all over town.
date/time: february 16-21.
content: the forest spirits send off their friends to join the aurora. memory opals drop from the eerie green lights above.
warnings: n/a.

i had all and then most of you, some and now none of you.

For most of the day on February 16, all of the town's forest spirits can be found along the stretch of road between downtown and the harbor, clearly setting up for, uh, something. They're piling snow onto the pathway, creating a miles long sled trail that starts outside the Landmark Inn and ends at the very end of the harbor's dock. Not only that, but the forest spirits are also not super willing to explain what they're up to! They're busy, you lantern-havers.

By the time evening rolls around, the spirits have set up wooden railings alongside the snowy path, as well as a warming tent, hot chocolate booth, and announcer stand outside of the Landmark. Oh, and a starting banner for the race! It's dogsled time!

Throughout the event, Beacon's downtown and harbor areas will be completely overrun with forest spirits, all there to bear witness to this holiday celebration—this holiday is for them, though, not you weirdos with your naked faces. Point is, none of the spirits will be hostile at this time! They're more interested in interacting with each other than with Beacon's residents, though if pressed, a kind spirit might be willing to explain what's going on:

The aurora arrives in Beacon for about a week each year, and the forest spirits believe it to be "friends in the sky". The lights are old friends of theirs, it seems! And each night while the aurora shines above the town, the forest spirits send off a handful of friends to join the aurora! The spirits ready to join the aurora build sleds of their own and assemble mighty sled teams, sometimes comprised of dog spirits and sometimes... other stuff. Then, when the aurora is at its peak in the wee hours of the night, the sled teams will ride off one by one, racing down the snow-covered path all the way down to the harbor, where they'll finally rocket off the dock and out over the lake, picking up more and more speed as each team gallops wildly over the water before arcing up into the sky. Once the spirits are barely a speck, they'll hit the aurora and burst into a shower of light. Beautiful stuff!

See, since the aurora is made of light, forest spirits launched into it are killed on impact! Isn't that wonderful! The forest spirits seem to think so! What is death to a dead thing!

All of this information can be learned through handwaved/played-led interactions with the forest spirits during the event. They'll all be focused on saying goodbye to their friends and cheering them on as they stream through the sky, but they're happy to welcome lantern-havers to join in the celebrations. The hot chocolate is free and only tastes a little bit like mud, so. Enjoy!

•••

For the entire duration of the event, the aurora will dance in beautiful silence overhead, lighting up the whole town with its eerie green glow. Every so often, handfuls of opals will rain down like meteorites from the lights above, and these opals each contain the memory of someone currently in Beacon! They can be found all over town, landing on paths and atop buildings and maybe even rocketing straight through your ceiling to crash into your living room. Perhaps a forest spirit decided to hide some shiny rocks in your cereal box or under your pillow... Better hope the Postmaster General doesn't find your opals before you do, though. That spirits sure does love their rocks. Point is, who knows where the opals might turn up?

On that note, if you signed up for a random event, we'll be RNGing characters to receive these random events throughout the event! The event may happen in response to a toplevel on this event log, or we might turn up in your IC inbox... πŸ‘€ These events will be entirely random, meaning we could dole out any number of them at any time, so it'll be a fun surprise for all of us.

If you missed signups and would still like to toss your name in the ring, go right ahead! Signups will remain open throughout the event, though we can't promise everyone who signs up will get something.

And finally... Each day, we'll post a list of the forest spirits joining the aurora! What, did you want to know in advance? The forest spirits have never been a particularly organized bunch, so they're winging this—which means more surprises for you. :)

Enjoy the races and the lights and the opals, residents of Beacon, and remember: WHAT IS DEATH TO A DEAD THING!

yes
why

[ His reply isn't immediate. The only thing that really has him replying sooner rather than later is that it might be an emergency. He thinks, though, that if Quentin were hurt, he'd know about it somehow already. Maybe.

Or maybe things are going to absolute shit and Eliot's just wasted a few precious minutes by weighing his options.
]

is he ok?

Big, obvious steps. Towards what, exactly. What steps. Soldat looks away with a frown, not even sure they want to know. It's been a hell of a couple days, and more digging at their own brain sounds like it's going to make the continuing low-level headache worse.

So they just hunch further and say, "You're fine, too."

I was thinking of going to watch the spirits sledding into oblivion
if that works for you
and this slightly ominous meeting

Just the thought of Heiwajima Shizuo slides the edge of his lips upward. He doesn't know the guy personally, no, but he's always been an immediately recognizable piece of Ikebukuro. If Masaomi could see a flying vending machine or road sign here in Beacon, it would only put him at ease. He'd been a little scared of the guy back then. Now he remembers even the most hectic encounter more fondly. But when Sora frees his hair from that oversized collar, Masaomi's nostalgic little grin has vanished. His mouth is tight, face pale.

"Oh," he manages, pauses to lick his lips. "You saw that, huh?"

Sora looks absolutely hilarious. Right out of an ancient educational video. But all Masaomi can bring himself to look at are the other boy's shoes. What else can he say? After a moment, he settles for the first thing that comes to mind.

"He's okay. ...Mikado, I mean."

"Unlike me" goes unsaid.

As she speaks, Sora's expression drops a little, his eyes widening as he realizes what she could be talking about. He's been hesitant about touching the stones, fearing another echo induced unconsciousness, but now he's stripping off the glove on his other hand and putting it on top of the stone and -

"If you don't let anyone close in the first place, you think they won't be able to hurt you."

- he knows that he won't get an echo from this one because he remembers this. He remembers this because, at some level, he'd lived this. This is his.

"I'm so sorry," he says. He closes his hand over the stone and peels off the other glove over it, shoves both in his pocket, leaving him barehanded as he. He doesn't know. He doesn't talk about this. There's no place to begin.

He gets on a knee, looking into her face, his own face creased in concern, trying to see if she's all right. "I'm sorry. That was." His eyes waver to her feet, but quickly move back up to her eyes. No, he has to be upfront about this. "That was. Me. The same way Roxas was me. Was Sora. That was the other half of my heart. That's what's there." He bites the inside of his cheek, trying not to breathe too hard. Was she okay? How much did she understand? She was never supposed to see that. No one should see that part of him.

[ Sora is going to come a little closer, which is a miracle because it feels like his bones are melting and on fire because he knows exactly how this feels. To not be the right person. To not be who your dearly beloved needs you to be. To want someone who doesn't belong to you.

There was a beach in January, and him chasing after Riku, not realizing that he was just that. Not the right person. That was the exact word Riku had used that night. "Selfish." And he was right. That's what Sora was.

That didn't make the pain any less real.

So Sora's going to bend a little and wrap his arms around her shoulders and pull her into his chest, setting his chin on top of her head, trying to will her heart into being okay. ]

You can be selfish. It's okay. It's fine. I'll be here. We'll be okay.

Just so you know, [Quentin says, taking a bite out of the croissant just to stop himself from spilling just everything. There's going to be a time and place for that, but it's not going to be Midge's kitchen after finding memories in rocks.] it's going to take more than just a stroll in the woods to make up for that. You didn't even get to see me do that thing I always wanted to do.

[ Sora has never heard of those indeed, but his first life was filled with those kinds of stories. He'd never really read them for himself! It was always Riku or Kairi calling him a dummy for not reading the same books they did, then filling him in, acting them out. He liked the stories better like that. They always seemed so excited to tell him what happened. ]

Soldat keeps calling my world "weird". They're right.

[ Sora smiles. Keys and princesses and dragons and space ships and pirates and monsters and stars. He wouldn't believe any of it if they weren't what made him real. ]

Then again, isn't that, like... what's the word? [ The word is "relative". He's not going to find it. ] Something that means, like. If you live one place all your life, everything else is always gonna seem weird. And there's always something weirder whenever you go someplace else.

[personal profile] moderatelymaladjusted 2020-03-06 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
[What did he just say? And Quentin blinks a little stupidly before slowly shaking his head.]

No? That's kind of the whole point. That there are just some things I really want to keep to myself. Telling you would kind of defeat that.

[He takes another drink, almost draining the glass.]

But nice try, though.

[personal profile] arsarcanum 2020-03-06 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
[ What other people might do to her? Sora's going to be cautious about assuming too much, but either that's some regular old "people are not great usually" paranoia (which, okay, is fair), or there's something specific to Elle that would make people want to hurt her. Which, like... the first thing seems more likely, but he'll keep the second thing open as a possibility, even though he doesn't really like the sound of either. ]

That sounds really lonely. [ Sora swings his arms a bit, thinking, his pockets full of stones moving with his arms a little. ] It must be kind of weird being here and suddenly being surrounded by other people you're allowed to talk to. You said that, right? This place is a chance to meet people from lots of different worlds.

[ How could someone's life possibly be so grim that unconsciousness could be the nicest part of one's day? Is something he'd ask, but 1. Somnus kept that to himself, and 2. Sora's experienced several years worth of those kinds of days so he's not in any position to throw stones. ]

Okay, cool, so now you have one friend. [ Sora shrugs. Easy. ] Hope you got some nicer memories back. Anything worldsaving in them?

"I didn't erase his memory again." She couldn't, his life had been cruel and she hadn't wanted to make it worse. "I don't know... why he cared."

NaminΓ© shook her head. "He shouldn't have. Not after everything I had done."

That would give them...quite the bit of blackmail information.

( ambrose doesn't really care if some of his memories come to light but he knows that can't be the case for everyone. e)

It would be powerful in certain hands.

[personal profile] necromantiae 2020-03-06 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't trying to pry into your memories, I promise. I just didn't know if you wanted to speak about those that you thought might be out there.

( he shakes his head. )

It was just an offer. Don't worry, I'm not going to try and poke into your head for whatever you might have in there.
sublimebeast: (Well excuse me princess)

[personal profile] sublimebeast 2020-03-06 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I did."

He gently retrieves the opal from his pouch and holds it out.

"You and a pack of wolves."

Explaining someone else's memories to them feels a bit bizarre but it also seems rude to hand back an opal and not give the other person a chance to brace themselves.

"Sorry for peeking, I wouldn't know whose it was if I didn't."
sublimebeast: (You're all safe)

[personal profile] sublimebeast 2020-03-06 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[A small laugh.]

Yeah, I think saving everyone is a good plan.

You won't even have to do it alone, 'cause it's my plan too.

[Maybe if he can find a way to save this world from darkness he can find a way to do the same for Hyrule... Maybe his spirit can go home.]

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-03-06 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Has anyone actually asked it, then?" Stone wonders. He doesn't remember finding it on the tablet, but given his number of entries there are that are in text, and how he still hasn't managed to find the setting that lets the creepy computer-voice read text entries aloud, it's entirely possible he missed it. "Maybe someone should. Solis or Robin, or maybe both."
scarsolderthanyou: (Default)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-03-06 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[Stone enjoys a good story, and someone who gets really into telling it like that is even better. Reminds him of a few of the Arbora back home. He settles back on his heels to listen, looking intent and occasionally amused.]

Well I can't say I understand how any of that works, but it sounds pretty wild. So you lived a whole life that then never really happened, because when you came back it was just like you never left and you hadn't aged... and you still remember aging and having kids and grandkids.

[He shakes his head, impressed by the complexity of it all, at least.]

That has to be confusing.

[ Jason is perfectly justified in his presumptions, actually! After all, when Sora and Jason first met and had their conversation on the general store floor, for all of the differences there were, Sora would have agreed with Jason. There wouldn't even have been a shadow of a doubt in his mind. He would have agreed he was Sora. On a very personal level, he knew he was Sora. Who else could he possibly be? Skyler? Skyler was a different person. Sora's entire existence depended on the fact that he was absolutely not Skyler, even if they happened to share the same memories. Even if being called "Skyler" feels right, too.

So of course those memories of Sora belonged to him. Those friendships belonged to him, too. Of course his friends would be happy to see him if they ever met again. (Big if. Sora had always considered that a dream. A pie in the sky fantasy "what if" that would never happen because it was impossible. Everyone was long dead.) Why wouldn't they be? He'd really, really thought he was Sora back then. Of course it'd be wonderful to see them again, as long as he was ready. Those were his friends. He missed them. They would miss him, too.

Meeting Riku changed a lot.

His first reaction to the hug is oh, that's very nice, because he's realized a few weeks back that he likes hugs a whole bunch and Jason is very tall and it's nice to feel small sometimes. The second is a little embarrassment because, geez, he didn't get his point across if Jason seems to think he needs a hug, did he?

He's about to clarify that it's fine, except Jason has something to say, and then Sora still has something to say, probably a thank you, that really counts for a lot, even if he's not a person at all, even if Soldat keeps insisting that he is. Except when he tries to open his mouth, nothing comes out because his throat refuses to work, and there's saltwater in his mouth and oh, okay, he's crying now. Sure. That's not embarrassing or excessive at all. ]

Oh. [ More of a sigh than something voluntary. He's not crying in earnest - it's just some blobby tears that he can't stop at this point - but there's something wound up very very tight and it's taking what he's got to hold whatever it is down. Since Jason hasn't seen his face yet, he is pretty sure if he doesn't move an inch he can still save this, so this might be Sora going very very quiet so Jason doesn't worry his way into letting go. This is an extremely nice, warm hug and he doesn't want it to end. ]

( He scoffs a bit, his nervousness giving way to hysterics. What does he care what Soldat thinks of him? Javert's already told him multiple times he's not a good person, nor a good police officer. He's failed his superiors in every way a man could possibly do so. Perhaps now he will understand. )

Well, here is your answer, then. I condemned myself. After escorting Valjean to his house, I took to the Seine and threw myself into its current. It's no less than I deserve.

( Even now, after everything that's happened, he still believes that. )

It's a much better dark secret than some of the ones around here, not even including himself. Honestly, it's no wonder Cao Pi is making sure he saw this - he'd be handing it out himself.

"It's a good thing," he says. "If people found you intimidating or difficult to speak with, it makes you more approachable. Or if they were put off by how different a time and culture you come from, it's probably something they can relate to."

"No, it's - I completely understand," he says with a nod, and a small sympathetic smile, though it fades quickly. "I don't know how he's doing, and he wasn't really in a state to be alone. Plus... he was there when I died. I dunno how that's going to affect him."

He has a lot of worrying he's done over the months. For all that Law is smart and self-sufficient and determined, the unknowns terrify him and he imagines Gregor must feel much the same way.

Hmm.

( It's not a feeling Javert's familiar with. The only thing that has ever brought joy to his life is his work, not other people. There's never been anyone in his life that's made him feel such a way. He doesn't think too much about that, though, wondering instead, )

You said that he was sick. What was the matter with him?

[Soldat shakes their head, a little apologetically.]

I don't remember. I still don't have very many memories of him. I know there was something wrong with his lungs. And. Maybe his heart? And he was very thin, couldn't keep weight on. A hundred pounds, even after a good meal, at five foot four. But none of my memories put names to any of those things.

"You better." Sora mutters a little to himself. Jason is so good at things. He's so good at everything, possibly. Juno must be nuts. Sora's gone 1v1 with titans and gods before, he'd give Juno a piece of his mind.

"Anyway. Tell me more about Thalia. What was that group she joined? Something about Artemis?"
