EVENT LOG: THE NIGHT WE MET

EVENT LOG:
THE NIGHT WE MET

characters: everyone.
location: the path from downtown beacon to the harbor; all over town.
date/time: february 16-21.
content: the forest spirits send off their friends to join the aurora. memory opals drop from the eerie green lights above.
warnings: n/a.

i had all and then most of you, some and now none of you.

For most of the day on February 16, all of the town's forest spirits can be found along the stretch of road between downtown and the harbor, clearly setting up for, uh, something. They're piling snow onto the pathway, creating a miles long sled trail that starts outside the Landmark Inn and ends at the very end of the harbor's dock. Not only that, but the forest spirits are also not super willing to explain what they're up to! They're busy, you lantern-havers.

By the time evening rolls around, the spirits have set up wooden railings alongside the snowy path, as well as a warming tent, hot chocolate booth, and announcer stand outside of the Landmark. Oh, and a starting banner for the race! It's dogsled time!

Throughout the event, Beacon's downtown and harbor areas will be completely overrun with forest spirits, all there to bear witness to this holiday celebration—this holiday is for them, though, not you weirdos with your naked faces. Point is, none of the spirits will be hostile at this time! They're more interested in interacting with each other than with Beacon's residents, though if pressed, a kind spirit might be willing to explain what's going on:

The aurora arrives in Beacon for about a week each year, and the forest spirits believe it to be "friends in the sky". The lights are old friends of theirs, it seems! And each night while the aurora shines above the town, the forest spirits send off a handful of friends to join the aurora! The spirits ready to join the aurora build sleds of their own and assemble mighty sled teams, sometimes comprised of dog spirits and sometimes... other stuff. Then, when the aurora is at its peak in the wee hours of the night, the sled teams will ride off one by one, racing down the snow-covered path all the way down to the harbor, where they'll finally rocket off the dock and out over the lake, picking up more and more speed as each team gallops wildly over the water before arcing up into the sky. Once the spirits are barely a speck, they'll hit the aurora and burst into a shower of light. Beautiful stuff!

See, since the aurora is made of light, forest spirits launched into it are killed on impact! Isn't that wonderful! The forest spirits seem to think so! What is death to a dead thing!

All of this information can be learned through handwaved/played-led interactions with the forest spirits during the event. They'll all be focused on saying goodbye to their friends and cheering them on as they stream through the sky, but they're happy to welcome lantern-havers to join in the celebrations. The hot chocolate is free and only tastes a little bit like mud, so. Enjoy!

•••

For the entire duration of the event, the aurora will dance in beautiful silence overhead, lighting up the whole town with its eerie green glow. Every so often, handfuls of opals will rain down like meteorites from the lights above, and these opals each contain the memory of someone currently in Beacon! They can be found all over town, landing on paths and atop buildings and maybe even rocketing straight through your ceiling to crash into your living room. Perhaps a forest spirit decided to hide some shiny rocks in your cereal box or under your pillow... Better hope the Postmaster General doesn't find your opals before you do, though. That spirits sure does love their rocks. Point is, who knows where the opals might turn up?

On that note, if you signed up for a random event, we'll be RNGing characters to receive these random events throughout the event! The event may happen in response to a toplevel on this event log, or we might turn up in your IC inbox... 👀 These events will be entirely random, meaning we could dole out any number of them at any time, so it'll be a fun surprise for all of us.

If you missed signups and would still like to toss your name in the ring, go right ahead! Signups will remain open throughout the event, though we can't promise everyone who signs up will get something.

And finally... Each day, we'll post a list of the forest spirits joining the aurora! What, did you want to know in advance? The forest spirits have never been a particularly organized bunch, so they're winging this—which means more surprises for you. :)

Enjoy the races and the lights and the opals, residents of Beacon, and remember: WHAT IS DEATH TO A DEAD THING!

Naminé wasn't human in the strictest sense. She was a nobody, granted the husk of a body so that she could live apart from the person who had created her; born from a heart without darkness. She had been born with no memories of herself and the notion that she had no emotion despite the crushing loneliness that had rooted within her. The horrors she saw didn't touch her but it was only because she'd completely shatter if they did.

Sora. Riku. Soldier. Her friends were her light.

Her friends kept her strong.

She only wished that she could be Soldier's strength in return. "It's easier if you sleep but meditation will also work. Sit and close your eyes. Clear your mind. It will allow me to go in and reconnect the chains. If you begin to think of something, I will see it." It was easier in sleep; she could make it dreamless but she didn't think that Soldier would be comfortable sleeping given their current placement and situation.
really_sketchy: Chain of Memories (55 - I failed)

[personal profile] really_sketchy 2020-03-05 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
[She's ready to argue with him; to explain that her existence was never supposed to occur. She isn't supposed to exist but all of that falls from her lips as Sora's words pierce deep within her chest.

'You've been alone for a long time, right?'

It is true but it's a fact that she's made a point not to return to dwell. It's something she's never turned back to face and it still hurts. That feeling of loneliness hasn't left her be. The knowledge that she's an abomination of a Nobody with no purpose expect as a tool for the Organization. That's what she's been told, over and over again. And she believes it.]

I was alone. [Her voice is very soft.] I was sad and scared but I could have stopped. I could have stayed there and on one would have found me. It was because I called Sora that the Organization began to take interest, that I hurt him. And I know I hurt you too. [She places her hand over her head but keeps her eyes focused on the ground.] My Sora. Even if you don't remember. I know that those memories must be locked within you too.

I was so happy when you were here. That you wanted to know me. That we could be together.

It was selfish of me. I've always been like that.

[She's always wanted to exist without feeling like she has a right too.]

[Naminé isn't practiced at making friends or any general interactions with another person. She's learning and a lot of what she's learned has come from Sora who trusts fair to easy and attempts to make friends with everyone. It might end up back firing on her one day but this is what Naminé has decided to do.]

Yeah. [She meets his smile and continues to smile even as he explains that he's found one of her opals.] Oh. Right. I know about those. I have found a few… [It is a little awkward but if he found one of hers then she'd want to know.]

Sora… he doesn't remember me. At all. [It is very awkward admitting this.] If we are both in the memory, then it is likely mine.
really_sketchy: Kingdom Hearts 2 (32 - Explaining)

[personal profile] really_sketchy 2020-03-05 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh. Thank you." This was the first time that she's actually had hot chocolate and after her first sip she cannot wipe the smile from her face. It tastes so good!!!

"I can help. I like drawing." It wasn't a topic they had covered before but she'd be happy to show him some of her drawings in return and maybe she can help him draw Donald and Goofy too. "Sora asked me to do that too. I wonder what for." She didn't know that it was to collect more memories of them… which might be problematic since some of those memories could be hers.

She'll have to cross that bridge when its time.

"Oh. I found this. I think it belongs to you. It was… a very happy memory. I thought that you should have it." She fished the opal out of her pocket and held it out for Jason to take. "I'm sorry for watching it. It's the only way I knew what it was."

[personal profile] really_sketchy 2020-03-05 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't mean that we can't miss them.

[It might not be sad for the spirits who are choosing this path but it's painful for those watching.]

They will be missed. [She pauses and looks back up at the sky.] They should be missed.

[No one should be forgotten.]

[personal profile] really_sketchy 2020-03-05 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
"That's right." Naminé smiled in return. She knew what it felt like to be forgotten and it was horrible. She never wanted to forget anyone. "It's important… I- I hope that I'm not forgotten when I'm gone too." She glanced back down at her drawing and exhaled a heavy sigh before firmly changing the direction of her thoughts.

"Is there someone I can draw for you? Or as a gift to a friend?"

She has not noticed that he was blind.

Naminé moves very slowly, cradling the opal against her chest as Vanitas spoke. He's right but his words are cruel. "I didn't... know what else to do." She knows that it's an excuse and a lame one but she hadn't wanted the Replica to hurt Sora...

"I told you... that I wasn't nice."

He hadn't believed her then.

Her smiling declaration makes Riku smile, his expression softening with something that seems to transcend just "understanding", it's closer to faith. She's overcome so much adversity, Riku might not know everything, but he doesn't feel like he needs to.

Her resilience and strength of heart have seen them through some incredible odds. He remembers the way DiZ... the real Ansem the Wise spoke about her and Roxas and can just imagine the dehumanizing experiences she went through.

That she knew Xion...

No, of course she did. It was the memories she had that they needed, after all, but he'd considered that more business than... than what they had on the beach. Their own lives, maybe. Something personal and precious.

"Decades ago... she was here? Then-- she must have--" either she was taken in a reset, or... even if she escaped somehow, surviving decades out in the wilds of this hazardous world, Riku can't even imagine. She was supposed to be safe, she was supposed to be reunited with her friends, "That wasn't supposed to happen."

[personal profile] really_sketchy 2020-03-05 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
"I think... a lot of this wasn't supposed to happen Riku. I don't understand it myself but you saw me and Xion. You experienced more than me but I was there and here. Maybe there are many many versions of us and some have already been here while others aren't yet." Maybe their was a world where she died as a lingering will and another where she faded into Kairi forever.

Thinking about it made her head hurt.

"I don't know... I wish I did. I just want answers." It wasn't that simple but Naminé hoped that it'd some how be more clear over time.

"I wish I knew how we got here. Did we really die or... was that not suppose to happen?"
knifecollecting: (I don't care what you think)

[personal profile] knifecollecting 2020-03-05 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
[While her life never got as exciting as apparently being raised by a giant wolf, it wasn't a normal life.

She carefully wraps the opal in a bit of fabric she always keeps with her for bandaging wounds before she gets moving to the Bonfire.

It's not hard to find Jason in the crowd and she clears her throat when she's close enough to be heard.]

Hey there.
worthallthis: (wary)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-03-05 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah nope, Soldat does not feel comfortable sleeping with someone right there doing shit to their brain. Especially not outside, in the middle of nowhere. But at least it's on a relatively safe path. So after a moment they sigh and find the stump of a tree someone cut down for lumber a couple months back, the nearest thing remotely like a seat, and settle onto it.

"You oughta know. My brain is pretty. Weird. There's gonna be shit in here besides just me. Not sure if that's gonna get in your way." A pause. "I'll be able to stop you if there's a problem. Right? Or if trouble comes out of the trees?"
mindofathief: (heavy sleeper)

[personal profile] mindofathief 2020-03-05 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah.

Not much help now, since the world's ended anyway. Maybe in the afterlife, wherever that is, it can help, but otherwise I have no clue what to do with this.

[sigh. His life is a series of questions.]

I wish I knew how to use it.
really_sketchy: Art (86 - Promise)

[personal profile] really_sketchy 2020-03-05 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Naminé steps closer, so that she's standing directly in front of him. "It's alright. I have done this a few times and, well, everyone is a little different. I promise if something goes wrong I will stop or if something happens. I'll be out here keeping watch."

She smiled at him and tried to exude confidence. "Are you ready?"
worthallthis: (good work soldat)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-03-05 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. They're nervy and uncertain and more than a little embarrassed, knowing Naminé is about to hear the Sergeant and the Asset, most likely. Knowing it's easier for Aziraphale if they're calmer, though, they settle on the easiest thing to calm themselves down: folding paper. They nod, and imagine the colored square, the folds to start a crane. The angle exactly so, the fold here, and back out again. Another fold this direction. It helps, though it might be distracting for Naminé once she gets in.

Neither the Sergeant nor the Asset were directly focused on the goings on a moment ago, but as soon as there's an actual touch to their shared mind, both get summoned pretty quickly. (Whoah shit what who's in our head, buddy--) That's the Sergeant, a younger and more expressive version of Soldat's voice, also thickly Brooklyn and somehow more bitter. (New technician?) That's loud, steady, and nearly monotone-- the Asset, violent but also terrified, and a lot smarter than it sounds.

Soldat can't risk answering. Just. Folding paper. Stay calm, pal, you can do this.
really_sketchy: Art (66 - Memories)

[personal profile] really_sketchy 2020-03-05 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Naminé lightly brushes her fingers against his forehead as she focuses. She doesn't need to touch him but she thinks that it'll help him if they have a physical connection while the process is taking place.

She smiles at the folding paper but quickly moves past it to the memory she'd seen in the opal. It's easy to find because she knows exactly what she's looking for. Then she just has to chain it back in order. This was harder for her because she wanted to respect his wishes.

She feels the voice more than she actually hears it and sends one soft sweet thought out in return. 'I am here to help.'

Oh, absolutely not.

[He almost sounds offended.]

I'd say I'm the opposite, but that would suggest I believe in any religion. [And if there's any irony in that statement, he's going to ignore it.] No, I was actually disappointed when you didn't succeed. Who was it that stopped you?

[Sure didn't look like Swiss guards.]
callada: (are you actually high right now?)

[personal profile] callada 2020-03-05 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
[This is all so completely strange that he just. Looks at Kuai for a second. Squints, even, trying to make some sense of it, but that's a real challenge.

It's not that he thinks Kuai is lying, just what the actual hell, man.]

So when you say you were turned into a robot - you had a metal body? Or more like a cyborg, where they simply made... changes?

[The latter is far easier to comprehend than a person becoming a robot entirely, and then not being one later. Is Kuai a cyborg now?]
nekrosmanteia: (6)

[personal profile] nekrosmanteia 2020-03-05 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
There's a lot to unpack there. Not only did the Nazi science division apparently survive the second World War, but they had the technology to brainwash people into trained killers. He assumes technology, anyway, but it could be something else. Something that makes people live a lot longer than they're supposed to.

"Were they trying to continue the war? What would they still have to gain?" Unless Soldat's world is actually run by Nazis, or something. "And speaking of the war, you don't exactly look like you're in your 60s or 70s." Or older, probably.
callada: (at least I laugh at myself)

[personal profile] callada 2020-03-05 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
I guess so. But I always liked adventure stories. Used to read a lot of pretty cheesy ones when I was a kid. "Detective Percival" and the "Dogs of the Sea" series and all that kinda stuff.

[Which, hm. Sora probably has never heard of those, but oh well.]

And the ones you and some of the others tell are real, so that's even better. Your worlds are so strange.

[Says the ten foot tall guy who gained powers from eating a fruit.]
techtype: (I can't believe this)

[personal profile] techtype 2020-03-05 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's true. I'm not planning on sticking my hand into the Bonfire or anything anytime soon, but it happened fairly recently so I'm still getting used to...everything.

[He offers her a smile regardless.]

Sorry for the terrible first impression.
worthallthis: (good work soldat)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-03-05 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
"Cryofreeze," Soldat explains first, a little wearily. "Whenever I wasn't training or on a mission, I'd be in cold storage." And as if that wasn't enough to add to the big pile of things that need unpacking, they tackle the other question: "HYDRA wanted. Order. And order only comes through pain. Ah, fuck." They actually wince at the HYDRA slogan popping right out of their mouth, and rub at their forehead with the flesh thumb. "Sorry. They were shitheads, if you couldn't tell. Were after world domination. I never really believed it, exactly, just did what they told me to because I didn't remember any better."
callada: (just the usual heroics)

[personal profile] callada 2020-03-05 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Sure. That's what I did with those two over there.

[He points. Early on he'd spotted the two stars always visible to the west so reliably. They're consistently visible just over the treetops, with little variance between hours and apparently seasons, as winter must be coming to an end and yet they haven't moved much since he last saw them in early autumn.]

Homing and Dorotea. The first two I named, actually. My parents. They're pretty stable, actually, that's always west.

[He's not feeling poetic enough to say anything about them offering guidance, but, well. He's thought about it plenty. They set an example he's always been determined to follow.]
callada: (me abandonó sin avisar)

[personal profile] callada 2020-03-05 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I've never done any gardening, but - sure, I could try.

[The offer takes him by surprise, but he warms up to it quickly as his eyes go from wide to softer, and a smile grows on his face. Yeah, all right. Might as well give it a go.]

Do you have anything you'd recommend? Something that's not too difficult?
techtype: (small talk)

[personal profile] techtype 2020-03-05 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Pretty much. Though not officially, because there's some kind of ceremony that has to happen--anyway, he's kinda weird about people knowing his status sometimes."

He supposes it doesn't really matter now that he's dead and all, but Prompto's not a mind reader and doesn't know for sure.

"Ah no, not really. Like I said, we had to go get a bunch of ancestral weapons...and let Noct talk to some gods, then we found out that the bride-to-be was actually still alive but in another country. That's only part of it, but we'd be out here all night if you wanted to know everything."
worthallthis: (Default)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-03-05 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
The touch makes them twitch, and force their brain stubbornly back on track with origami after a momentary frisson of alarm. They're not great with touch in general, and around the head in particular when dealing with brain shit. It's okay. It's Namine, she's not gonna hurt them. They're pretty sure.

(New technician..) The Asset doesn't really do inflection, but the repetition suggests firmness. The Sergeant, on the other hand, sounds exasperated. (Ah fuck, Asset, we don't need that, reign it in, pal.)

The memory with the children is solid, but finding what it connects to will be tricky. The Chair literally worked by frying the connections between memories. Worse, there are so many repetions of the same experience that finding the one that goes with this one will take some work. She'll find at least four groups of little girls Soldat had a hand in training, dozens of moments of leaving a room with a strange Chair and a metal halo, endless children and adults in sparring matches. She'll have to focus hard on the right set of girls.
