EVENT LOG: THE NIGHT WE MET

EVENT LOG:
THE NIGHT WE MET

characters: everyone.
location: the path from downtown beacon to the harbor; all over town.
date/time: february 16-21.
content: the forest spirits send off their friends to join the aurora. memory opals drop from the eerie green lights above.
warnings: n/a.

i had all and then most of you, some and now none of you.

For most of the day on February 16, all of the town's forest spirits can be found along the stretch of road between downtown and the harbor, clearly setting up for, uh, something. They're piling snow onto the pathway, creating a miles long sled trail that starts outside the Landmark Inn and ends at the very end of the harbor's dock. Not only that, but the forest spirits are also not super willing to explain what they're up to! They're busy, you lantern-havers.

By the time evening rolls around, the spirits have set up wooden railings alongside the snowy path, as well as a warming tent, hot chocolate booth, and announcer stand outside of the Landmark. Oh, and a starting banner for the race! It's dogsled time!

Throughout the event, Beacon's downtown and harbor areas will be completely overrun with forest spirits, all there to bear witness to this holiday celebration—this holiday is for them, though, not you weirdos with your naked faces. Point is, none of the spirits will be hostile at this time! They're more interested in interacting with each other than with Beacon's residents, though if pressed, a kind spirit might be willing to explain what's going on:

The aurora arrives in Beacon for about a week each year, and the forest spirits believe it to be "friends in the sky". The lights are old friends of theirs, it seems! And each night while the aurora shines above the town, the forest spirits send off a handful of friends to join the aurora! The spirits ready to join the aurora build sleds of their own and assemble mighty sled teams, sometimes comprised of dog spirits and sometimes... other stuff. Then, when the aurora is at its peak in the wee hours of the night, the sled teams will ride off one by one, racing down the snow-covered path all the way down to the harbor, where they'll finally rocket off the dock and out over the lake, picking up more and more speed as each team gallops wildly over the water before arcing up into the sky. Once the spirits are barely a speck, they'll hit the aurora and burst into a shower of light. Beautiful stuff!

See, since the aurora is made of light, forest spirits launched into it are killed on impact! Isn't that wonderful! The forest spirits seem to think so! What is death to a dead thing!

All of this information can be learned through handwaved/played-led interactions with the forest spirits during the event. They'll all be focused on saying goodbye to their friends and cheering them on as they stream through the sky, but they're happy to welcome lantern-havers to join in the celebrations. The hot chocolate is free and only tastes a little bit like mud, so. Enjoy!

•••

For the entire duration of the event, the aurora will dance in beautiful silence overhead, lighting up the whole town with its eerie green glow. Every so often, handfuls of opals will rain down like meteorites from the lights above, and these opals each contain the memory of someone currently in Beacon! They can be found all over town, landing on paths and atop buildings and maybe even rocketing straight through your ceiling to crash into your living room. Perhaps a forest spirit decided to hide some shiny rocks in your cereal box or under your pillow... Better hope the Postmaster General doesn't find your opals before you do, though. That spirits sure does love their rocks. Point is, who knows where the opals might turn up?

On that note, if you signed up for a random event, we'll be RNGing characters to receive these random events throughout the event! The event may happen in response to a toplevel on this event log, or we might turn up in your IC inbox... 👀 These events will be entirely random, meaning we could dole out any number of them at any time, so it'll be a fun surprise for all of us.

If you missed signups and would still like to toss your name in the ring, go right ahead! Signups will remain open throughout the event, though we can't promise everyone who signs up will get something.

And finally... Each day, we'll post a list of the forest spirits joining the aurora! What, did you want to know in advance? The forest spirits have never been a particularly organized bunch, so they're winging this—which means more surprises for you. :)

Enjoy the races and the lights and the opals, residents of Beacon, and remember: WHAT IS DEATH TO A DEAD THING!

I saw Skywalker standing over you with his lightsaber. He wanted to kill you.

[He was sure that Luke Skywalker was afraid of Kylo. Kylo's powers most likely were greater than Skywalkers and Skywalker wouldn't want another Vader. Hux didn't look away from Kylo, meeting his gaze evenly.]

I saw you kill him on Crait.

[Her eyebrow quirks at the reaction- she's not sure what she said, but it seemed to leave some kind of impact on him.]

Yes. Thousand of years. The spirits helped humans survive the worst of it. Half of them remained as they are, the other half turned into Vastaya.

[She crosses her hands, scowling-]

Now, years after the catastrophe, humans had forgotten the fact that the spirits saved them, that the Vastaya are the ones responsible they still breathe. They hunt us down like animals, locks us up in cages, rip our magic away from us. My entire tribe disappeared overnight, with my father, because the greedy humans can't have enough power.

[Hux is trying to find his opals but it's difficult when it's dark and his opals seemed to be black. It made them difficult to find and he had only managed to find one aside from the other one Kylo Ren had given to him earlier. He didn't know what other memories were scattered around and the last thing he needed was for others to see memories he preferred to keep private.

He didn't really notice Rosinante in the dark at first since his gaze was searching the ground, more focused on bending over to grab what he thought was one of his opals than watching where he was going.]

Excuse me.

[She hears the last two sentences, of course, but sorry, her brain is utterly snagged by that first one. She blinks at him, her eyes darting over his face, uncertain as to how to take a comment like that. On, like, three different levels, frankly.]

Ah . . . you, ah, admire men in such a fashion, then?

[She'll get back to the implications of what else he said in a second, but one thing at a time.]

[ Alas for Sora, Somnus has no manners. ]

I've a memory of yours.

[ Several, all from a single opal. He still reels when he thinks about everything he experienced. He procures the glove and holds it out to Sora.

And yes, it's quite grand, this light—he can actually see without having to swing his lantern around. ]

"No need to thank me, you brought my memory to me, it is the least I can do for you." She nods, then smiles a little, her head tilted, "That's fine. I doubt I will mistake your presence with anyone else's, even if it is a memory." He just has that kind of aura that draws in the attention of others, that draws in her attention at times. He's... quite a remarkable, enigmatic human being. There's no way she'll confuse him with anyone else.

[Prompto carefully but hastily wraps up the opal, stuffing it into his jacket pocket.]

You...you didn't. Not on purpose. You don't have to apologize for anything...if anyone does, it's Ardyn.

[Right, Altissia. Where he was supposed to have been blinded. Where Noctis successfully made his pact with Leviathan at the cost of Lunafreya and a good portion of Altissia's infrastructure and trust.]

Not that he would. Um...do you want to know what happened after Altissia or why I ended up alone to begin with?

[ She always had a hard time getting used to human structures. She always believed they built and built just so they can hide behind their high walls out of fear. There are so many appliances in that cabin she was in that made her uneasy. But this- a structure out of glass with a see-through roof, might be the only building she approves off that humans ever constructed.

Xayah peers down at him from her "nest" when Kuai holds out his hand with the stone- ]

What? There's more of them?

[After shuffling around, Xayah's wings stretch and she flies up and then lands gracefully in front of him.]

I thought the partying was over, [she muses and takes the stone from him. Ah... this one again. Her lips twitch into a small smile, unknowingly to her as she stares at the rock.]

Sora nods. That's fair enough. "I think my idea might be kinda bad too, but I'm still gonna do it. I want to think that more people will help me than try to hurt me, you know?"

And he'll pause. "Susie. That was... your little sister, right? Do you remember if you were the oldest?"

[ She won't ask for details if he doesn't want to share them- she's a private person herself and doesn't talk about her affairs. This was one hell of an exception; the rock didn't really give her a choice. ]

Mmm. Kids are tougher than they look. There's something so resistant and unyielding in them. I've seen it a lot.

[ -lived that way ever since her tribe disappeared. There's certain stubbornness to young people that have them rebel and push on regards to all oddities. ]

I am sure they will grow into a fine person, just like yourself.

Nnnope, Sora's of the opinion that it's a perfectly good brain doing its best under bad circumstances! He gives Soldat an equally stubborn look - see, two can play at that game! - but he'll continue on about his fairies! He does like talking about them, after all.

"Uh-huh! Yuna, Rikku, and Paine. Three of em, all about the size... maybe from my fingers to my elbow?" He lifts his arm so they can look at the scale. "Little fairies with wings who could float and do magic. They called themselves the Gullwings! They were treasure hunters." He looks up and closes his eyes. Weirdly enough, he can remember quite a bit about them. "They were working for someone bad, I think, but then Donald scammed them into thinking that we had more treasure than whoever they were working for, so they started working for us. Fairies in my world only have room for one emotion at a time, and I think the only emotion they were working with was selfishness."

"They were a little mad when they found out that we didn't have much, so they were like, okay, that means we're taking everything you're holding right now! I guess that was fair, but boy, they had us sweating for a sec." He snorts, then laughs. "Turns out the feeling they had at the time was, like, mischief? We were a lot nicer than the person they were working for, and that person had lied to them too, so they figured that we were cooler anyway."

[Hux had tried to find as many opals of his that he could but considering they were black and he only had the light of his lantern, he decided to give up for now.

He decided to take some time to enjoy the lights and the spirits throwing themselves into the aurora since there was not much else he could do.

But he was distracted after a moment when he heard someone speak up beside him. He held up his lantern but he didn't recognize the other man.]

It's certainly something I've never seen before. It's oddly memorizing.

Again, tell me what you saw. I can only read minds if I force my way in and I know you'd rather me not do that.

[ It pains Kylo to know that Hux saw one of the moments that started his true descent into the Dark Side. He had been giving his mind to Snoke for years, but that moment was the one thing needed to push him over the edge, causing him to fully turn his back on the Light. He brought the temple down, burned it to the ground and never looked back. ]

[ Sora does jump a little bit as he looks up - hey, he thought she'd be inside! - but all is forgiven as he sees her drop down! Hi, Xayah! Sora is, as usual, delighted to see her. ]

Have you been in town recently? You know all those stones coming from the aurora? [ He's going to wave a stone in his hand. ] I think I have one that belongs to you. [ And he'll hand it over if she's willing to accept it! It's in a little paper packet labeled "XAYAH - Rakan? Bar fight. (Cool.)" ]

I was in the shuttle overlooking the salt plain. You sparred with Skywalker for a few moments before running him through with your blade. He was there one minute and the next he was gone.

[Hux wasn't going to ask what happened after what he saw with Luke, he didn't need to know. He just knew that it was the reason Kylo left the Jedi Order to join the First Order.]

[ ... Now that is now a reaction that Sora hadn't been expecting. (Or maybe he had? Something about the way he'd swung that sword...)

He doesn't have problems with referring to the original as the "real" Sora - after all, now that Naminé is here, he feels real enough too - but he didn't realize that Link would react quite like this. ]

Link? Hey, I'm sorry. Can you tell me what's wrong?

What?

[The question stops him short, if only because it's absolutely not the thing he was expecting her to pull from that. But, oh, yeah... surprise! He laughs.]

Yeah, I'm bi. Everyone's cool with that kind of stuff in 2025.

[That is a wildly optimistic way to put it, but she doesn't need to know about the bummer parts of the future. They're definitely cooler about sexuality in 2025 than in the early 1900s, that's for sure.]

"What?"

And really, Quentin is starting to sound like an idiot even to his own ears, but someone human...-ish, breaking in to the cabin was so far down the list of things he thought he might be getting into tonight, that it might as well not be on the list at all.

He lets the shield fall, and with a huffed sigh, he sits back down on the couch.

"And you couldn't just, you know, hand it to me like a normal person? Why are you even--"

Quentin rubs a hand over his face and he pulls his lantern out, putting it on the table. The cabin looks cluttered, not with clothes or empty cardboard food containers, the way the apartment he had shared with Julia once, had looked. There's paper in little piles stacked on the table and on chairs, books in neat stacks on the floor and Quentin's handwriting is all over everything.

There's also a person dressed completely in black standing just inside against the wall, which... tracks. Sure, why the hell not.

"Okay, just... give me whatever it is and get out?"

[ Wow, Rosi got it in one! Too bad he didn't ask that one out loud, Sora would be much more forthcoming about it than Soldat would be.

Anyway, he will thrust his current glove of memory opals in his pocket and yank off his own glove, letting Rosinante drop it inside, tying off the finger it falls into. ]

A steamboat... [ Sora thinks about it... then a slow smile appears on his face. ] Don't tell me more about it - seriously, don't tell me more about it, just give me a yes or a no - was the world all in black and white? Did everything like... sound funny?
meridio: (14)

[personal profile] meridio 2020-02-22 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
Magic is just science that scientists haven't made boring yet.

When Soldat lays it out like that, it almost feels like he's overestimating what Somnus can do with the Armiger. After all, he's never put more than perhaps a dozen or so weapons (and a myriad of other, smaller things) into that pocket. He'll have to experiment some more before announcing anything to the public.

Never mind that he can barely use the tablet. In order to do more for this world, he'll have to learn to do better.

"Your proposal is sound, but I must further trial my suitability for the task. Once I've determined the answer, I shall inform you and the others."

( She goes from sympathetic to rolling her eyes real fast. The gear change is jarring, as she rolls her eyes and crosses her arms as she sees he's not, in fact, maimed. )

Yeah, okay Marianne, you need me to carry you home?

( A reference to Jane Austen may never have sounded so scathing. )

Mate, I fell in there the first day I was here, and I was just fine.

( That is not, strictly speaking, accurate. Whatever. Sarissa shrugs, rolling her eyes. Men are so delicate. ) Just get a cup of cement in yous and you'll toughen right up. No wakkas.

( Somehow she makes wakkas a few seconds more than it needs to. )

Hm? Nothing...

[His grip loosens and he sags forward slightly.]

That was just a weird choice of words.

The other guy wasn't the real Brave One. He's just the one who came before me.

I'm the Hero of my time, it's my turn now--

[As the words pass his lips more anxieties about being the Brave One bubble to the surface and he looks away from Sora, feeling very ashamed of himself.]

I mean...

It was my turn.

Yeah. Well, I'm also here to find more of these - [ He takes an opal from his pocket with some gloved fingers and waves it before putting it back ] - but it's nice that they're doing something they like.

Anyway... why would being human help? Is it like... a soul thing? I mean, I get that they're dead, and we're dead and stuff, but... [ He shakes his head. ] I don't get it, I guess. It's just confusing.

Not bad. I mean, I could've thrown it better. ( Teasing is woven into the blatant, overdone arrogance of her tone.

Sarissa's quiet for long moments as she holds the opal and sets it down on the sand. Given Elektra's manner, the apology, she's not sure she wants to chance taking a look at it herself. Some things were bad enough to have lived through once. )

You know, in Ancient Greece they believed opals was formed from Zeus' tears. The war against the Titans was a war against his own kin, and each tear that hit the ground became one of these.

( There's a moment of pause before she looks back to Elektra. ) What'd you see?

Maes. Maes. Why would you do this. Why would you say nothing. The things you are doing to this poor kid's heart. (Kisses are important! So important! Sora... is aware of other stuff Maes might have gotten up to afterward, but this is definitely at the edge of his own experience with intimacy.)

He's going to fidget with the hem of his sweatshirt under the silence, slowly turning bright red. If someone told him there was steam pouring out of his ears, he'd believe it. Eventually, the tension snaps and he just kind of. Yelps. "SORRY FOR KISSING YOUR WIFE I KNOW YOU LOVE HER A LOT AND SHE'S VERY BEAUTIFUL BUT BELIEVE ME IT WAS AN ACCIDENT AND I WON'T DO IT AGAIN NOT ON PURPOSE ANYWAY??? ANYWAY. SORRY!!"
