EVENT LOG: THE NIGHT WE MET

EVENT LOG:
THE NIGHT WE MET

characters: everyone.
location: the path from downtown beacon to the harbor; all over town.
date/time: february 16-21.
content: the forest spirits send off their friends to join the aurora. memory opals drop from the eerie green lights above.
warnings: n/a.

i had all and then most of you, some and now none of you.

For most of the day on February 16, all of the town's forest spirits can be found along the stretch of road between downtown and the harbor, clearly setting up for, uh, something. They're piling snow onto the pathway, creating a miles long sled trail that starts outside the Landmark Inn and ends at the very end of the harbor's dock. Not only that, but the forest spirits are also not super willing to explain what they're up to! They're busy, you lantern-havers.

By the time evening rolls around, the spirits have set up wooden railings alongside the snowy path, as well as a warming tent, hot chocolate booth, and announcer stand outside of the Landmark. Oh, and a starting banner for the race! It's dogsled time!

Throughout the event, Beacon's downtown and harbor areas will be completely overrun with forest spirits, all there to bear witness to this holiday celebration—this holiday is for them, though, not you weirdos with your naked faces. Point is, none of the spirits will be hostile at this time! They're more interested in interacting with each other than with Beacon's residents, though if pressed, a kind spirit might be willing to explain what's going on:

The aurora arrives in Beacon for about a week each year, and the forest spirits believe it to be "friends in the sky". The lights are old friends of theirs, it seems! And each night while the aurora shines above the town, the forest spirits send off a handful of friends to join the aurora! The spirits ready to join the aurora build sleds of their own and assemble mighty sled teams, sometimes comprised of dog spirits and sometimes... other stuff. Then, when the aurora is at its peak in the wee hours of the night, the sled teams will ride off one by one, racing down the snow-covered path all the way down to the harbor, where they'll finally rocket off the dock and out over the lake, picking up more and more speed as each team gallops wildly over the water before arcing up into the sky. Once the spirits are barely a speck, they'll hit the aurora and burst into a shower of light. Beautiful stuff!

See, since the aurora is made of light, forest spirits launched into it are killed on impact! Isn't that wonderful! The forest spirits seem to think so! What is death to a dead thing!

All of this information can be learned through handwaved/played-led interactions with the forest spirits during the event. They'll all be focused on saying goodbye to their friends and cheering them on as they stream through the sky, but they're happy to welcome lantern-havers to join in the celebrations. The hot chocolate is free and only tastes a little bit like mud, so. Enjoy!

•••

For the entire duration of the event, the aurora will dance in beautiful silence overhead, lighting up the whole town with its eerie green glow. Every so often, handfuls of opals will rain down like meteorites from the lights above, and these opals each contain the memory of someone currently in Beacon! They can be found all over town, landing on paths and atop buildings and maybe even rocketing straight through your ceiling to crash into your living room. Perhaps a forest spirit decided to hide some shiny rocks in your cereal box or under your pillow... Better hope the Postmaster General doesn't find your opals before you do, though. That spirits sure does love their rocks. Point is, who knows where the opals might turn up?

On that note, if you signed up for a random event, we'll be RNGing characters to receive these random events throughout the event! The event may happen in response to a toplevel on this event log, or we might turn up in your IC inbox... 👀 These events will be entirely random, meaning we could dole out any number of them at any time, so it'll be a fun surprise for all of us.

If you missed signups and would still like to toss your name in the ring, go right ahead! Signups will remain open throughout the event, though we can't promise everyone who signs up will get something.

And finally... Each day, we'll post a list of the forest spirits joining the aurora! What, did you want to know in advance? The forest spirits have never been a particularly organized bunch, so they're winging this—which means more surprises for you. :)

Enjoy the races and the lights and the opals, residents of Beacon, and remember: WHAT IS DEATH TO A DEAD THING!

She looked over at him and frowned. "I don't know what... son of Jupiter means. I think you should do what you enjoy. No matter what anyone else says." She smiled. "That way you'll be happy and since we're friends I'll be happy too." So it was a win-win situation.

She took the side of his sketchbook and began to roughly draw out Donald first. Her art wasn't amazing by any means, it was almost like a cartoon but she eventually darkened clear lines and tried to smudge or erase the others, outline the familiar shape of her friend.

It was coloring that she usually went outside of the lines because she thought it looked better when the subject was part of the setting. In made it look as if everything was connected through variant lines of color.

When she was finished, she placed the pencil down and pushed the sketchbook back so he could see. "This is Donald. He is a duck that walks on two legs and welds a magical staff. He is very skilled at using magic and usually wears blue but I don't think ducks wear pants." She'd never really thought about it before.

"I can do Goofy next. He looks a little bit like a dog but with a very long face."

Naminé looked up at him and without warning, she stepped forward and pulled Riku into a tight hug. Maybe it was Sora's influence but she wanted to give him a hug, to assure that they were there, for the both of them.

"I know. Thank you Riku. I-" Her voice trailed off as she held on with all her might. It was a light squeeze of her arms and then she was gently pulling away. "I'm always worried that I'm bothering you but I miss you Riku. I want to see you. Even if it's just a little more." She saw him from time to time but Riku had his own habits and Naminé felt awkward intruding on them.

"Will you come see me? You can stay in my room if you get tired." She'd sleep on the couch though she didn't specify what she was talking about.

[Klaes looks Stone over for a moment before half smiling with no happiness in it.] Almost none o'that makes sense to me.

[He'd never seen a tree in person until he arrived here in Beacon and he's been assured these are not the best examples of trees at their best.]

'xcept we have lost colonies before. Not always with a war or a disaster. Sometimes just gone. Never heard from again.

[And sometimes torn apart my technology you've never encountered before, like Eros.]

How did they just...die? Do you know?

Oh, no, Sora gets that, if he's reading Masaomi right. He unbundles the sweater from his lap and gets up himself, turning away from Masaomi and shaking it out. Man, why is this thing so big? Must be a get-along sweater or something.

"Yeah. Let's go." Sora grins. There's a lot to do at the gym, and Sora's pretty comfy with lots of it. (Bro, does Masaomi lift?) "Maybe they have a punching bag. I haven't checked yet."

Maes nods, because there isn't much else to say that Sora hasn't already hit on. The worst part in his opinion is that it's his LAST memory of Gracia. He hasn't gotten to make new ones of her, to push the nightmare away with reminders of who she actually is as a person. He's stuck with that smirk, the glint in her eyes.

The opals are a gift in that sense, perhaps with enough exposure he can beat them down entirely.

"It's perhaps been the hardest part of being separated from them...but what about you?" He pauses for a moment, recalling the earlier part of the conversation that had led them here to begin with, "Who are you afraid won't recognize you any more? Actually...I think the original question was about destiny and soul mates."

Old age. The flooding that damaged that part of the tree. An injury.

[Stone shakes his head.]

I don't know. It was centuries ago, there wasn't enough left to tell. You know... I don't even remember their names, now. And I'm the only one who remembers them at all.

[He does fish around in a pocket, though, and offers Ashford another opal.]

This one's happier. And will show you a little of what a colony tree looks like, from the outside, on one of the garden platforms.

[The platform in question has a beautiful view of the forest beyond, as well. So Ashford will get a whole lot of greenery to enjoy. The trees in the Reaches are much, much, much bigger than the ones here...]

Masaomi doesn't remember any traditional punching bags strung up in the building, but he's sure they've put together some make-shift version by now at least. Wanting to beat the stuffing out of something cannot be a rare feeling around these parts.

"Even if they don't, they have swords." An old weapon nobody cares about and a tree make pretty great companions during these trying times. "That's close enough."

He glances at the sweater as Sora airs it out. It really had been a funny sight - the thick, mustard yellow fabric draped over Sora's shoulders like a hideous mockery of the boyfriend shirt. He gestures toward the sweatshirt as he passes Sora on the way out.

"You should keep it. Throw in a pair of nerd glasses, and you could be the world's loudest librarian."

As is the usual for Riku, he has that lengthy moment where he doesn't know what he should be doing with his hands, so they hover uncertainly over her as she hugs him tightly. It's not that he dislikes her or the attention, he's just also usually slow to warm to physical displays of affection even though he craves them.

There's also the added stress of that question (of course he'd visit) paired with that invitation (s-stay in her room???) that makes him balk, swallowing wordlessly around his mounting embarrassment.

"Hold on," he thinks it's a small miracle he keeps his voice steady, "You can't just invite a guy to sleep over. Think about your safety, Naminé." Guys can be awful! They both know this! There's a whole Organization (and then some) of people who treated Naminé horrifically.

Yeah, it's... not great. Sora wishes he could help with that. Maybe someday he will? Some other day, though. He'll ask Naminé, see if she can do anything.

He scratches the back of his head. It's a long story, one that he's avoided talking to Maes about so far because it hasn't really mattered much. Time to pause and weigh what he's about to say, mentally cutthing out the excess.

"Yeah. So. I guess I'm kind of like you? I died in one world, and then I got sent to another world, and then I died in that world and I got sent here." He tilts his head. "I... don't remember how much I told you, but that's about the same as you, right?"

He sighs. This is the part where he glosses over a lot. "In the second world - like, what the Circle was for you - I got sent to Earth. It was." He fidgets. (Not with his sleeve, just sort of all over.) "It wasn't... all of me, though. Not all at the same time. I was being sent into someone else's body. Like, I was replacing him? It kinda got to a point where I was just. Taking over." He rubs his face with a hand. "It was like reincarnation. Whatever was going on, I was being put into the body of someone who was supposed to be me in the next life, but instead of just my soul, it was like I was replacing him. Just straight up."

And now we have nothing but time to dwell on the past. Especially with situations like this that continually remind us of who we were, what we lost.

Along with giving us views into others' as well.

[Views that he would rather not have. But if nothing else he can't deny he's actually learning a lot more about the people he's trapped with.]

How many of these stones have you found?

A few decades of training and concentration and it becomes easy to see every moment as an opportunity.

The downside, I suppose, is there's no way to turn that off.

Naminé pulls away to look up and comfortably meet his gaze. Her palms linger on his waist but then slowly drop to her sides as if it's an afterthought to his response. "But you aren't a guy... you're Riku." She pauses, blushes and tries to back track. "I mean you are a guy but we're friends. I don't mind sleeping on the couch and Hana is there too." Living in the other room but it isn't like she's entirely alone.

She paused thoughtfully and was probably now over thinking it. "Have you heard about pillow forts?" Probably but right now there are a lot of pillows in Naminés room.

"Is it really unsafe?" She knew what the organization did but Naminé didn't think that everyone was like that. Besides, half the organization was nice. They had given her the body that she had now.

"You don't know? Even Kairi-" he starts to say, when the twist of grief in his chest cuts him off. Even Kairi had the occasional trouble, he meant to add, but maybe it never looked that way to Kairi, who could handle herself. Just to Riku, who, returning from a long period away from the islands, had realized he fit in even less than before. Kairi had grown and other islanders had noticed.

Maybe... he was just sensitive to the differences, the way time inevitably changes what was once as familiar and comfortable as a favorite pair of gloves. Knowing she's living with another girl - even if it's someone who has absolutely made him fluster, a secret he will take with him to his grave - settles him somewhat.

Only for a chuckle to tumble out of him in surprise as she asks him about pillow forts.

"Sure, I've even built them," Riku finds this easier to talk about than the prospect of explaining why it can be dangerous to invite guys to sleep over, "When I was ten. Come on, are you serious?"

[personal profile] really_sketchy 2020-03-26 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
A worried knot gather in the pit of her stomach as Riku's words abruptly cut. She didn't know what was going through his head or why it was bad for her to invite her friends to sleep over. What memories she'd seen of Sora's past had sleep overs. Of course, they'd all been very young back then.

"I've never built one before. I have now, a few times. Sora helped once and Hana. It had made me happy and I thought we could do that too." She was connecting concepts that weren't entirely related to each other because it'd never been properly explained to her. Naminé knew that she was in an older body and technically the same age as Riku had been but this form was still new.

"I thought it'd make you smile if we did that too." This place was sad but she was determined to make the best of it.

Swords, huh. Sora wonders if Masaomi's got any tricks up his sleeve. He oughta ask when they get there.

Well, he's about to ask now, rolling up the sweater in his arms (hey, he knows how to fold his clothes, but that takes time, okay), but Masaomi has the gall to pick on him and in under a second Sora's ready to go. He whirls on him, hands still trapped in his sweater. Man, he'll fight!

"I'm not that loud," Sora says loudly, trailing behind Masaomi. "Hey! I can't be a librarian! I don't like books!"

Haven't kept count. A few. Even some of my own.

[He's found twelve stones. Some duplicates. Most he ended up handing back despite not originally intending to, but most didn't reveal secrets worth filing for the long term. With no benefit in keeping them, it seemed more suitable to give them back. The few he retained are sorted in his box and will be held more securely once he returns to The Invincible.]

Ellever raises both brows, fighting the urge to stay out of Jo's business and the urge to ask a million questions. It's bad enough that she picked up the memory to begin with, she feels. But her sense of curiosity is incredibly strong — too much for its own good, according to her father — and so Elle finds a middle ground. One question.

"Was there something, ah, not so friendly down there?"

Though they've had a couple of conversations, she's never pried too much into Jo's life. Knowing that she and the Winchesters came from the same Earth is only slightly illuminating. Nevertheless, Ellever knows that Jo knows how to take care of herself. Even if she knows it from watching her play the shooting range at the carnival.

"I hope you guys weren't sealing away the Ninja Turtles," she jokes.

[It's not one thing so much as the whole picture. She's always been so careful, omitting little details, making sure his detective's mind doesn't put together the puzzle pieces.]

He was two inches taller than me.

[She smiles faintly, her fingers drumming against the table.]

And eternally smug over it, despite the fact it's nothing more than the result of a chromosomal difference. He enjoyed cooking more than I did, too-- or at least, pretended to, which is another thing, he was far more cheerful than I.

[It's nothing particularly shocking or new, but it takes on a new context now.]

To a limit, naturally. Just as competitive, though.

[Jason doesn't know what that's like, which was why he had led with 'I don't know how similar the experiences are.' And he knew comparing problems was never a good idea, but between seeing -- no -- experiencing the memory for himself and now hearing her take on it. He still wasn't sure he could blame her.

She was certainly taking responsibility for her actions, her choices, and that said a lot about her as well. It'd be very easy for her to blame someone else for what she did, but she doesn't, though perhaps she does ignore some of the elements that led her to those choices to begin with.

He realizes he hasn't said anything for some time and directs his gaze towards her, being sincere.
]

I'm sorry you were put in that situation. I...don't know if there's much more I can say, but I still stand by what I said earlier...I don't think I'm in a position to judge you. I don't think anyone really is.

[He looks back to the fire, always finding comfort there.]

After all, everyone is a little selfish sometimes...especially when we're scared. It takes a lot to act differently from that and the fact that you can look back on it now and see it for what it was...I think that's something too.

Jason nods, but even still he's not quite sure what to ask or where to start. Granted, it's not like Rosinante said they had to do that this second, "I'll keep that in mind for the future."

He erases the drawing with his foot and starts to gather his things, now containing one more memory stone. "I should head out. Javert's training sessions are going to start soon and I don't want to be late." He stands up, stretching a little as he does so, and turning his attention to Rosinante, "Thanks again for bringing this to me. Maybe once we get more information about the World Eaters we can discuss more strategies..." He sounds optimistic, like THEY'LL be the group that solves this. Jason knows the odds are slim, but if he gives up on that then he'll have to give up on a lot of other things as well.
