EVENT LOG: THE NIGHT WE MET

EVENT LOG:
THE NIGHT WE MET

characters: everyone.
location: the path from downtown beacon to the harbor; all over town.
date/time: february 16-21.
content: the forest spirits send off their friends to join the aurora. memory opals drop from the eerie green lights above.
warnings: n/a.

i had all and then most of you, some and now none of you.

For most of the day on February 16, all of the town's forest spirits can be found along the stretch of road between downtown and the harbor, clearly setting up for, uh, something. They're piling snow onto the pathway, creating a miles long sled trail that starts outside the Landmark Inn and ends at the very end of the harbor's dock. Not only that, but the forest spirits are also not super willing to explain what they're up to! They're busy, you lantern-havers.

By the time evening rolls around, the spirits have set up wooden railings alongside the snowy path, as well as a warming tent, hot chocolate booth, and announcer stand outside of the Landmark. Oh, and a starting banner for the race! It's dogsled time!

Throughout the event, Beacon's downtown and harbor areas will be completely overrun with forest spirits, all there to bear witness to this holiday celebration—this holiday is for them, though, not you weirdos with your naked faces. Point is, none of the spirits will be hostile at this time! They're more interested in interacting with each other than with Beacon's residents, though if pressed, a kind spirit might be willing to explain what's going on:

The aurora arrives in Beacon for about a week each year, and the forest spirits believe it to be "friends in the sky". The lights are old friends of theirs, it seems! And each night while the aurora shines above the town, the forest spirits send off a handful of friends to join the aurora! The spirits ready to join the aurora build sleds of their own and assemble mighty sled teams, sometimes comprised of dog spirits and sometimes... other stuff. Then, when the aurora is at its peak in the wee hours of the night, the sled teams will ride off one by one, racing down the snow-covered path all the way down to the harbor, where they'll finally rocket off the dock and out over the lake, picking up more and more speed as each team gallops wildly over the water before arcing up into the sky. Once the spirits are barely a speck, they'll hit the aurora and burst into a shower of light. Beautiful stuff!

See, since the aurora is made of light, forest spirits launched into it are killed on impact! Isn't that wonderful! The forest spirits seem to think so! What is death to a dead thing!

All of this information can be learned through handwaved/played-led interactions with the forest spirits during the event. They'll all be focused on saying goodbye to their friends and cheering them on as they stream through the sky, but they're happy to welcome lantern-havers to join in the celebrations. The hot chocolate is free and only tastes a little bit like mud, so. Enjoy!

•••

For the entire duration of the event, the aurora will dance in beautiful silence overhead, lighting up the whole town with its eerie green glow. Every so often, handfuls of opals will rain down like meteorites from the lights above, and these opals each contain the memory of someone currently in Beacon! They can be found all over town, landing on paths and atop buildings and maybe even rocketing straight through your ceiling to crash into your living room. Perhaps a forest spirit decided to hide some shiny rocks in your cereal box or under your pillow... Better hope the Postmaster General doesn't find your opals before you do, though. That spirits sure does love their rocks. Point is, who knows where the opals might turn up?

On that note, if you signed up for a random event, we'll be RNGing characters to receive these random events throughout the event! The event may happen in response to a toplevel on this event log, or we might turn up in your IC inbox... 👀 These events will be entirely random, meaning we could dole out any number of them at any time, so it'll be a fun surprise for all of us.

If you missed signups and would still like to toss your name in the ring, go right ahead! Signups will remain open throughout the event, though we can't promise everyone who signs up will get something.

And finally... Each day, we'll post a list of the forest spirits joining the aurora! What, did you want to know in advance? The forest spirits have never been a particularly organized bunch, so they're winging this—which means more surprises for you. :)

Enjoy the races and the lights and the opals, residents of Beacon, and remember: WHAT IS DEATH TO A DEAD THING!

How anyone could live in space and be this blaze about it, is just-- beyond Quentin, who at the age of 24 still got unreasonably excited about a fantasy world inside an old clock.

"We're along way away from doing something like that," Quentin agrees, nodding along and looking out towards the stars here in Beacon. They're far away and nowhere near as thrilling and exhilarating as the one's in Will's memory.

"They're all kinds of dick. All of them. As I told you."

Vanitas stares at him for a long moment, then smirks and shakes his head. He's not sure if Quentin is purposefully obtuse or if he just doesn't get it, but there's something about it that Vanitas would interpret is naively endearing if he had the capacity to know what that feeling is like. It's like a duckling swimming around on a pond, oblivious to the monster circling underneath it.

Of course Quentin probably already knows what Vanitas would tell him. It doesn't need to be new information for it to hurt. In fact, those are the wounds that often go the deepest.

Really, he might be more curious about it if he wasn't sitting on a kind of messy turmoil that was taking up most of his attention right now. If he had it in him to wan to pursue curiousity, and his tendency to exact suffering in the people around him. Right now, he's just tired and wants to be alone.

"Goodbye, Quentin."

Maybe later, he thinks without conviction as he resumes his walk away.

( yes, some are good. she's learned at least that much with her own memories, having found at least one she's not willing to destroy of her sister. still, the fact there are less soul sucking brain rocks out there to find does little to change her mind about destroying them. )

So what? Nobody asked for their memories to stranded in a rock for anybody to see. ( an invasion of privacy either way, as far as she's concerned. so clearly the only answer is to destroy them all.

she shrugs.
)

If there are memories out here people think are worth saving, they just have to find them before I do. ( wow, so considerate... thanks carm. )

[ So being a marine in Rosi's world is sort of being like a water cop. Sora now has a place for his unease and will be even less willing to actually analyze what's up with him. Rosi's military. A cop. Sora... has nothing against cops personally, but. Three years changed him, man. ]

Tryna save the world. [ Sora looks up at the aurora for a moment, shakes his head and laughs. ] Well, I was trying to save the world. Jack was trying not to die. Get his Pearl back. Avoid Davy Jones.

Bullshit. Magic always has a source.

( ancient burial grounds, angler fish trapped in a hole to the center of the earth, souls trapped between life and dead turning their trauma into something physical, there was always some sort of source to magical happenings. they didn't just start falling from the sky.

it doesn't seem like her mother's MO, at least. if it were Lilita, they'd probably all be her memories. and none of the flattering, to turn the town against her.
)

Must be some spirit. They're always up to these mind games.

[ And it's always so hard to remember that Jason's younger! So much responsibility for a guy his age, it's absurd. Sora's always had the weight of the universe on his back, but he didn't have to organize it. It's wild to think Jason trusted with so much. Sora's... just rolling with it, really. ]

I dunno. You share so much about yourself.

[ And the only time he's ever seen Jason uncomfortable was during the lantern things last month and... the stuff with Thalia and his mom. Sora's just now starting to realize that Jason's really never told him how he felt about anything. He may be friendly and supportive and open to talking about himself, but he doesn't really seem to share if he's worried or sad. Sora's kind of been trusting him to say something if he needs to. He wonders if that's enough. ]

What was different with your other friends? I guess with like, Reyna at Camp Jupiter and your other friends at Camp Halfblood. [ He's pretty sure they were like equals, right? Thalia's blood, so she's has that, but Jason makes it seem like he was pretty much always in leadership positions. ]

"What kinds of problems?" The stuff about the prophecy sounds interesting, but Sora's one track mind is more interested in Jason's side of the equation. He has so many questions to ask Jason, it's sort of unbelievable. Jason's lived quite a life.

[Masaomi eagerly nudges an opal from the largest pile in Jason's direction.]

Jason, meet Mikado and Anri, my best friend and my best fling!

[He snickers as he finishes. She was most assuredly not what he's just called her.]

I bet they'll thank me on their wedding day.

[Stone makes a thoughtful rumble, and digs around in his pockets, then produces another opal.]

Here. This has an outside view of the colony tree in it. Moon and I were out on a platform, and there was another one on a nearby branch with Arbora working on it. You can kind of see the scale of these trees, that way.

The little illustrations really do add something. He nods along as he watches. "Right," he says as Jason trails off.

"This is good, though. That more than a few of you have experience fighting enormous creatures, I mean. There's you with Gaea, there's Cao Pi who fought the monster Orochi. It takes more than throwing heavy weapons like these people did, it takes strategy. The strategy itself will change, but it's good you've done it before."

He hates how hard it is to find the information they need, but they're all certainly persistent. It will come, and they will work together to develop the tactics they need.

"I know. I got pretty lucky meeting Piper and I'm grateful for the memories we have together." He'd already spoken to Naminé about his memory problems before, and since then he'd definitely become rather sensitive to just how precious they could be to a person.

He considers her assessment and nods, "I guess I hadn't really thought of it that way. But, like I said, I could use your help with the past right now. I thought the duck -- err Donald -- would be easier to draw. But it's a lot harder and I haven't even made an attempt at Goofy yet."

He takes a seat at the table again, sipping at his cocoa.

"Maybe we could help each other. I can help you think of things in the future to draw and you can help me with this." He pauses, an idea occurring to him, "I've never had someone else to draw with before actually."

[personal profile] notthatjason 2020-03-19 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Jason nods, because there isn't really a dispute to that. Still, he's not going to take it personal or get upset that other people are accessing his opals. After all, he's done his fair share of experiencing them.

"That was Lupa and her pack. She's a wolf goddess important to Rome...she helped raise me when I was young too, which was part of what you saw."

Jack being a pirate, I take it. How'd that happen? You sailing with a pirate crew, I mean, in order to save the world.

[Pirates don't save much, in his experience. Their "freedom" means anarchy and selfishness. Not the sort of people who typically do selfless things unless the benefit is their continued survival and ability to loot people who can't protect themselves. But he'll humor Sora for the sake of hearing the full story.]

[ At that admission, Ellever's expression softens. ]

Oh! Don't worry about that. There's actually a way out that connects to the sea. It's like a... rocky underwater chasm. People used to theorize that Nessie used it to go in and out for feeding or... whatever she filled her time with.

[ It had been a convenient point to place the sound receptors on, on the third day of experiments, because of its small size; nothing could get by without them noticing. Alas, all they'd seen was a bunch of fish. ]

Or, there's one where I'm from, [ she adds, a moment later. ] But probably one in yours too. Scotland's very craggy. Full of moss. And really cute cows. And... fried food.

( Javert lets out a weak scoff. Why must he always be so insufferably supportive? )

You do quite enough for me already. I would never ask for anything more.

( He does need people to help him, though, he just doesn't want to admit it. He never would have Soldat any of these things if he didn't have others coaxing him to open up a little more, reassuring him that he's a good person, and that he's worthy of friendship. It feels wrong for Soldat to offer him such a thing, when he himself is still troubled. Javert's pride will not allow it, and so he huffs unkindly, )

I don't require your pity.

Naught but grant me the lantern to move this flesh.

What other reason do I need?

Masaomi has no idea what he's expecting. Platitudes maybe? Awkward silence? Whatever it is he thinks is about to happen, it's not this.

He can't do anything but stare for several seconds, not really even seeing Sora as he tries and fails to process what the other boy is admitting to. Gradually, his eyes manage to focus, to properly meet the intensity in Sora's mirrored stare. Those strange pupils have always caught Masaomi's attention; now they serve as an excellent grounding tool.

Sora is definitely saying that he was in a gang and that someone he was keeping that from found out. He's not saying that he's a demigod or a witch or from another planet. He's saying something that sounds... well, too real to be real.

Masaomi's hand balls into a fist against the floor. His lips open, close, and open again before the his brain finally catches up. "So what did he say?"

No.

[Soldat can agree with that. They're not honestly sure they know what pity feels like, in themselves, but they know what it feels like to get it from other people, and it's not pleasant. They're used to unkindness of many kinds, but what unkindness comes from Javert is not for the sake of cruelty. That's fear, and that's shame-- and they do know what that feels like.

So they shrug and say,]

But nobody should be alone. No matter what kinds of wrong things they've done.

[They do know they've probably pushed enough for today, though, if he's getting snappish. Time to settle into routine instead.]

Did you want to have our chess game today? Or should I let you be for now?

Almost to Jupiter. Do you know it?

[So far this is one of the first people who seems to know about the Belt to begin with.]

I wouldn't know why I should worry or not. This sort of thing doesn't really happen where I am from.

[Particularly not after the Belters stole a holy ship and turned it into a warship]

[For a moment Ashford thinks Dean might have just had a small stroke of some kind, not picking up immediately on the fact that he's waiting for a name. As a result there's a few beats of awkward silence paired with a concerned brow furrow.

At long last he takes a guess at what Dean might be waiting for but still sounds uncertain as to the man's wellbeing]

[ Lord, the things Sora knows about pirates. He puts his hands behind his head and hums, thinking back to what he remembers about Jack and Will and Elizabeth. It's really a lot, comparatively. ]

It all kind of started with a rescue mission? There was this guy, Will, who was trying to rescue someone important to him from a bunch of pirates. [ Sora nods. ] That's when we met Jack, who was going to steal a ship to get out of town. Turns out that Elizabeth - the girl Will was trying to rescue - was aboard the Pearl, Jack's old ship, and the pirates who kidnapped her were Jack's old crew. They marooned him a long time ago and stole his ship. Jack owed Will a favor, and he was alone, so he needed a crew. [ Sora grins. ] And... after that we were sort of stuck with each other. Jack, Will, and Elizabeth helped out when stuff from off-world started affecting their world. We couldn't explain everything, there was a - a rule? Something about the world order. They did their best, though.

"Yeah. If something happens I'll call you first." She smiled confidently. "I know that you're nearby."

Naminé turned and headed off towards the Landmark before Soldier could argue or insist to come with her. She didn't want to be a bother and they were close enough that all she needed to do was get to the lit path and follow it back to the Landmark. It was an area she's walked countless times before now.

Really? Then she's not trapped. I'm glad. [ And he really truly does brighten at the idea! Honestly, that's made his day better by a lot. Not that it was particularly gloomy, but hey, he could probably use the reminder that things can be good in a place like Beacon. ]

Sounds like our Earths are pretty close, aren't they? [ He smiles, thinking about Scotland, trying to imagine it. The closest he's ever been to Scotland is completely across the English border in London, and that was, again, in another life. ] Bet there's a chasm there too.

"Really?" Naminé looked up at him, meeting his gaze with warm crystal blue eyes. "You know. I don't think I have had anyone to draw with either. I spent a lot of time alone in the Castle and drawing was my way of escaping that place, of not being alone. It helped me realized my powers and more about myself than I ever thought."

She smiled the more she thought about it. "Drawing really is amazing. I- I'm really excited to draw with someone else. I don't know if it will change things, how I draw or how I think, but I am excited." Naminé giggled a little bit. "It's wonderful experiencing new things!"

There was a lot about herself that she still had to learn but it felt like she might have time here in Beacon. "Alright. Let's start. Should I draw them first or... I can try and explain it."
