There wasn't enough room anymore, not for all the humans and a livable planet. The people in charge decided the planet was more important, sent most everyone else to the void. Mars, at first. Then farther. Earth itself? It's fine. Much better these days. It's a veritable garden-of-fucking-Eden. Just most people can't afford to see it.
