INTRO LOG: OCTOBER

INTRO LOG: OCTOBER
DON'T STOP ME NOW

characters: everyone.
location: the harbor, as well as the rest of town.
date/time: october 1-3.
content: beacon's newest batch of residents arrives on the ferry. scavenger hunt prizes are awarded. the ferry capsizes in a blaze of glory.
warnings: n/a.

welcome to beacon.

It's dim, and the room won't stop swaying, gently rocking you back and forth. A loud sound startles you fully awake, a deep, moaning call: a foghorn. As your eyes adjust, you note faint red light streaking through the room from a tiny, round window.

You've found yourself in a private room, lying on a bed. The last things you remember are the events that led up to your death. Beside you is a folded tablet and a lantern that glows steadily with a healthy flame.

You're on a ship. And that ship is docking.

Making your way to the deck, and eventually the pier, you find only moonlight to greet you, and a dark forest beyond. There are other people here, each with their own unique lantern, and many of them look just as lost as you are. On the ferry you've just disembarked from, the speaker system begins to play a song.

In the distance, across the waters of the lake, you can see the tall silhouette of a lighthouse, its red light slowly turning.

•••

Luckily for all the newcomers, the tablet and the town have some resources available for playing catch up! In fact, as soon as they're prompted to enter a network username, an app containing all sorts of useful welcome information will launch. Newcomers can always check out the weekly bulletins and the records in town hall as well, and everyone's welcome to get in touch with the NPCs through their inboxes.

When the ferry docks, it seems as though you've been spared from any weirdness this month! It's good to have a break now and then, isn't it? And if you participated in the scavenger hunt, you're probably eagerly awaiting your promised prize—

But, ohp, what's that sound? Is that the ferry's engine firing up again? The ship roars to life again as some brave mutineers overthrow its autopilot system. Crowley and the Winter Soldier man the ferry's control room while Aziraphale flits between the cargo hold and the deck, attempting to assuage any accidental kidnapees with reassuring words and cake.

Unfortunately, the joyride is shortlived. Between the ferry's complex control panel and the haphazard attempts to override it, all the group manages to do is send the boat charging full speed ahead—which would be great if it wasn't facing the beach. The ferry jolts forward and careens smack into the dock, tearing down the entire structure and punching a sizeable hole in the ferry's hull.

Well, that could've gone better. But there's no time to dwell on the mistakes of the very recent past! The ferry is sinking, and quickly! Looks like you'll have to scramble if you want to save what's left in the cargo hold before the whole thing goes under... And that's gonna be awfully tricky without a dock.

Oh, and maybe save the new arrivals? Make sure they don't drown? But, then again, if they go down with the ship, they'll just show up again in the church... The same can't be said for the restock for the general store!

As smoke billows from the damaged ferry and the last the harbor disappears into the lake, the Lighthouse Keeper appears on the network with a pretty straightforward question. Also, the ferry's song changes, so. That happens.

ooc.

Hey there, wonderful players, and welcome to In the Night! For this intro log, you are officially without a chaperone. Rastus is back at the bonfire, Will is characteristically elusive, and Robin is, well, you know where she's at. It's up to the veteran residents to fill in the new folks.

And regarding the ferry disaster... Well, you have some options. Here's what you need to know:
  • This is a player plot organized by MJ, Xy, and Gail! A big thank-you to them for providing us with this intro log event!

  • Whether or not your character and any packages addressed to them are affected by this plot is up to you! If you would like to assume your character avoids dealing with this chaos and somehow grabs their delivery without issue, go right ahead!

  • Similarly, if you're looking for an opportunity to make your character's life harder, injury and death are always on the table! Or maybe it's your package that takes the abuse, lost forever to the lake's depths or washing up all waterlogged a week or two down the road. In short: How you engage with this plot is entirely up to you.

  • What happens to the ferry and the dock? Within a couple of hours, the ferry will sink completely, and anything on board when it goes down is lost forever. Which bodes super well for the ferry, huh? Sure hope the next batch of newcomers has some strong swimmers. Oh, and the dock is gone, too. If you want it back, you'll have to rebuild it.

  • As for Crowley, Aziraphale, Bucky, and anyone else on the ferry or dock during the collision... Hope you boys like concussions, bruised ribs, and a broken bone or two, because you've got 'em! The exact injuries are up to you, but they're the equivalent of a semi-serious car accident.

  • One last thing: The fate of the shop restocks, including all of the food for the month, depends on you! Let us know if your character will be participating in the rescue attempt. In exchange for letting us beat up your character, you can save a portion of the month's supplies! We'll let you all know on October 3 what the rations for the rest of the month will look like.

"Oh!" Daylight's winglets perk up at both the suggestion and the mention of a name he's familiar with by now. Huh! "You know Aziraphale? I- I met him today, actually!

"Um- He's doing fine, to let you know." Judging by how Soldat is talking about them and the house, Daylight assumes they're roommates. Maybe he'd like to know one of his roommates' status. "Some of his seed packets got in the water but I think they could be saved. They weren't submerged for too long and it's actually safe to sake seed for over-" He stops himself, a little embarrassed that he caught himself rambling about gardening, and tries to salvage his end of the conversation:

"Yeah. Sure. Okay- We can do this at my place. I don't think Coraline is around but I hope she's fine and hang on I'll get the door."

Daylight flusteredly jogs up ahead to open the door and to get the time he needs to squeeze himself into the front entrance, seeing as how most of the buildings were not built with ten feet tall hybrids in mind.

[Jo doesn't know if fairies are real, but that sentence makes it sound like they are in his world. Interesting.]

Yeah, we are. I doubt anyone here has shipbuilding experience.

Why are so many people in this town so ridiculously tall? Honestly. (Well, two. Daylight and Rosinante. Both way too tall.) The Soldier follows, and doesn't even have to duck. "I'm going to be helping Misty with her garden," it offers. If Daylight enjoys talking about gardening, maybe it can learn something, to help her more efficiently? "She showed me how to turn over earth. To prepare the ground."

Probably not but perhaps there's people with carpentry experience or mechanical know how.

( or maybe someone could go about it the easy way... )

Or maybe someone just uses magic and creates a whole new ferry. I wonder if that would work.

[The picture he'd been sent before suggested a certain... size, but there really is no comparison once they're face to face. He's incredibly tall. And metallic. It's fascinating to behold but Bruce had been taught from a young age to, if nothing else, be polite. Perhaps Alfred would be proud, he doesn't stare.

It does make an unfortunately comical picture. Daylight towers over him and Bruce's package, still wrapped, continues to scream. It undoes every attempt he could make at discretion.]

I am. Thank you. For bringing this all the way here.

[He doesn't know where the batteries will be located, but he suspects that it's safe to assume it will be on the main console. Bruce takes the package and for the distance between them the whine shifts down half an octave. It is one of the last things he wants to do, but the situation necessitates it. Bruce begins to peel back the wrapping until the screen of the metal detector appears, a small light flashing back at him. Despite his unfamiliarity with it, Bruce takes only a few moments to find the plate underneath and work it loose, pulling a single battery out and thus plunging them both in to well deserved silence.

His ears are still ringing.]

That must have been very irritating.

Plenty of incentive to rescue what he can and do it quickly, frankly.]

He's more delighted, than irritated, however, like he's just found something neat and unexpected. Other worlds might not be his purview, but he's become enchanted with the notion, and knowing they're out there and they have more than just humans is lovely.]

Progress made on a disaster that shouldn't have happened, but that's been done. We're moving forward.

[And he really means that as he leans into Day changing tactics. Whatever "forcefield" he uses must be way more extensive than just an expended spell slot. Then again, he's not an expert on automatons. Daylight looks far more complicated than the Clockwork Warden ever was.]

Me? Oh, I'm getting by. Didn't even get so much of a scrape when I came out of all that. I owe a couple of people apologies for doubting them when they said we might run out of supplies, so I'll be getting to that later, rather than sooner. I hate being wrong.

[It's terrible.]

There's a pause. He's never had someone ask that, but at the same time that IS essentially what the Legion is -- the army and fighting force for New Rome. They mobilize and train and even sleep in barracks. Of course, the eagle itself isn't really a symbol of his unit so much as it is a symbol of his godly parent, but the reason for the tattoo is to mark him as one of Rome. So...

"Yeah, pretty much."

"Lotta military here. Wonder why, or if it's just coincidence. Still, kind of nice, right? Knowing a bunch of us have that in common. I was a Commander in the Marines back home."

He keeps doing this, introducing himself to perceived civilians only to find out later they're nothing of the sort. But having been here a few months, and having been quietly embedded in that pirate crew for years before, introducing himself to everyone as Commander Donquixote to start with just doesn't sound right anymore anyway.

The mention of Misty and the garden definitely catches Day's interest.

"Me too! I want to help Riku and Misty and the others with the garden." Daylight nearly bonks himself on the helm when he eagerly looks over his shoulder and winglet, the smile on his face somehow evident and clear all the same. He brings them towards the, erm, 'main' room of the house, so to speak. "I, um, have some gardening supplies on the ferry. They're getting dried out now since, um, the shenanigans and all."

He's lucky he was able to yank the supplies out before they had sunk down. "That was nice of Misty to do! Helping you prep the ground for planting. Did she also teach you how to do a soil test or ways to cultivate seeds from the fruits and vegetables from our supplies?"
worthallthis: (skeptical)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2019-10-25 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Listening to Daylight's excited ramble, the Soldier looks vaguely overwhelmed by all it apparently doesn't know. "No?" Is gardening that complicated? Did you not just put seeds in and water them and then hope they grew? (It's a city boy, Daylight. It doesn't know these things.) "Soil test?"

[ the lack of staring certainly helps put day at ease. it's been- nice, the not staring and the not reactions other have been having to his presence whenever a new group shows up. it helps him not feel as gangly or hyperaware of how much space he takes. (though he is a bit more aware of his size now, realising that he's meeting up with someone- maybe his age? younger? it's been forever since he's been around humans proper. ages are hard for him to pin down.)

but back on topic: at bruce's words, daylight smiles in thanks and is quick in letting out an audible sigh of relief when the noise finally dies and the two are granted some semblance of peace and quiet. he makes a show of rubbing the side of his helm, laughing a bit as he shakes his helm to show that it's alright. ]

It was- [ hmmm- how to word this without sounding weird? ] It was, like, an interesting experience. Definitely going to avoid getting myself whatever that is if that's part of its parcel.

But hey! It let me find it before it ended up sinking to the bottom of the lake. So I can't be mad at it for that. You have your stuff now and that's what's important, you know? [ ever the one to look at the bright side of things.

and, every the friendly one daylight feels like he needs to apologise for something: ]
Um- Sorry if you had some more items, though. I was heading back to the shore when I heard that and, well, I had other things with me that I couldn't let go to try and investigate further.

Molly spreads his arms to show that he is unharmed and every scar on his body is an old one. He didn't even have to bleed to fight anything- like a lake monster. All told, he's doing well. "Nothing to see here. I just have to get my coat back from Ambrose. He's probably wearing it."

It probably looks good on him, too. Bastard. "You, on the other hand, are in desperate need of a short rest."

Oh, good. There might still be something worth saving - and he's hoping for these seeds, he asked for a random crop but maybe they're something that can't be easily found at the grocery store.

"Oh, let me!" He dives into the water and swims towards where Daylight pointed, though it's hard to see with his vision blurred from the water, and finally he's triumphant. He surfaces with the seeds in his hand, taking a breath even though he doesn't need to.

( this might be the wrong question for Matt. his mind doesn't automatically accept the notion of magic, even though he's hard-pressed to deny it's existence at this point. he can't explain it, even if that might be the root cause.

that said, he can't deny what he doesn't know.
)

It could certainly possible. I don't understand the process that connects us to the lanterns, but I do know if the light goes out, there's nothing left but an empty shell, at least until we're revived. If we're revived, ( he has to self correct. that's an option, apparently; he's not interested in dying any time soon to chance coming back himself. ) If that isn't the soul, I don't know what it'd be.

( a heat pack. it'd probably help, and the fact Matt has nothing to say about it is more or less concession to the argument. ice is beyond them, heat could be managed... though not quite as easily as plugging in a heating pad or throwing one in the microwave. it wouldn't be an impossible feat to accomplish, just far more difficult than it would be in another situation. if Matt gets his way, he'll convince her to bed before she can spend pointless minutes on a heat pack that is bound to only have minimal returns. that said, he's pretty used to Elektra doing as she pleases whether it's what he wants or not, so he's not exactly hopeful he'll be able to convince her.

it's a little easier, it's true. there might not be any particularly easy way of doing it, though that's not going to stop him. Matt doesn't have anything clever to say. instead he focuses on wrapping the bandages around her, tight enough that she'll feel the pressure. a good pressure, when it comes to ribs that don't appreciate being pushed so far from where they like to be. any time his fingers touch her skin, they seem impossibly warm compared to slightly damp skin exposed to the air.

he's trying to work quickly, though he does pause about halfway, touch lingering at her side as he slips a few fingers under the bandage to check how tight it is. it's the most intentional touch on her naked skin so far, his fingertips a scant few inches from her spine. still, it's a starkly different touch then when his hands used to stroke up her bare back. it's practical and concerned more than intimate.
) Too tight? ( he'll loosen it for her if she needs it. )

"It's- Um- Well-"

Daylight makes a wild little gesture with his servo as he hems and hums, no doubt trying to put his thoughts into coherent words. It's been so long since he talked about this sort of stuff with someone else besides his family and Gardenia back on the Lornful Light. He now finds himself having a little bit of stage fright.

Just a little. Because if this could help Soldat out than Day will do his best-! "The soil test basically gives you an idea of what your soil is like. The texture and compositon and mineral density. That sort of stuff.

"There are four ways I know you can do a real quick test: Squeeze, Percolation, Worm, and Ph. I think, for now, Squeeze is the easiest and simplest for us to do. Gives us an idea of what soil we're working with and-" He stops now, realising he's been chatting a long time as he gestures for Soldat to enter his room and have a seat on the big, Daylight-sized bed made of two beds if he wanted to. "Sorry. That was a lot of rambling, huh?"
worthallthis: (yikes)

Generally, the Soldier would be uncomfortable with sitting down in a situation like this. But Daylight is simply so non-threatening (the ten-foot-tall robot is non-threatening; yes, this is the truth), and it's been such a long day full of panic and guilt and digging through broken things. The Soldier's tired. It sits, easing down gingerly on the edge of the bed and cradling its malfunctioning arm against its stomach, watching Daylight with a slightly dazed expression.

"It's okay." And it is. Mostly. The Soldier might be a bit overwhelmed, but some of that is probably just the whole situation. The whole day. (Night. Whatever.) "You should write that down. How to do the soil test thing. Share it with everyone." Then more people would know, and the Soldier itself wouldn't have to figure out where the right places to nod or add to the conversation, like an actual person.

Right. A rosary. It's not big, it'd be easy to lose.

( Matt is already resigned to the idea it might very well be already gone, washed away and sunk to the bottom of the lake like so much else of the ferry's cargo. that said, he doesn't know it's gone — and it does prove a good distraction, even though having the girl fish through crates is not exactly resting proper. Matt suspects he'd have a hard time convincing her to just sit still when she's willing to exhaust herself, immediately upon arrival in such a terrifying place.

he looks too, though slower than Eleven. more or less he can fish around for a second or two and know there's not a rosary in a crate, just by the sounds and echoes of the contents. Matt won't be mentioning that, making him officially more cagey about his abilities than the tiny preteen girl.
)

So you have powers. You lift with those. ( she's right, it is a logical conclusion... or, at least, it's a bit more logical now, since Matt has been in Beacon long enough to get more understanding of magic. mind manipulation is something he's heard about, too, there was that whole scare with some British guy that could control minds in the papers a few months ago. it's not completely unbelievable, just hard to wrap his head around.

yeah, the guy who can smell neon and uses his super senses to see like a bat finds that hard to wrap his head around.

[ there's methods they can use if he's willing to get rustic. if he's got rice, they can heat it without cooking it and wrap it in a hand towel. it might not last long, but it could offer enough relief to let him fall asleep a little easier.

she remains still as he works, arms folded on the back of the chair and trying not to shake at the cold. the pressure is already helping her ribs ache a little less; the bindings are tight but in a way that feels on its way to healing the damage.

she swallows when his fingers slip underneath the bandage, moving over her bare skin, though she knows the intentions behind it are purely practical and medical. the touch is warm against the chill in the air and the warmth spreads over where she's been touched, offering a little comfort and relief. she looks back at him and shakes her head. ]

It takes a lot of Day's willpower to not dive after Aziraphale, reminding himself that he'll be causing more trouble than help if he dove in and dispersed more water than he should.

But his restraint is paid off when he sees the return of his scavenge buddy. Ever supportive, Daylight is quick to cheer for Aziraphale's victories upon seeing the man break the water, his winglets wriggling in joy at the sight. "Yay! You got them!"

"Are they okay?" Daylight moves forward, trying to get a good look at the seed packets to assess their current status. "Not too bad, right? Nothing ripped or broke?"
